  • Identify external factors that may influence strategic direction:

  • Define the Strategic Themes or planning categories in which intercollegiate athletics must excel in order to achieve its vision:

    • Facilities
  • Assign a set of measurable goals, strategies, due dates, responsibilities, and resource requirements to each Theme
  • Determine strategic priorities (Goals)
  • Establish goals that are realistic, attainable, and measureable
  • Attach measurements, supporting strategies, due dates, responsibilities, and resource requirements to each goal
  • Formally commit to achieving vision; create a strategic culture
  • Consistently communicate and emphasize and strategic priorities
  • Appoint a strategic plan manager or core planning team (preferably senior-level staff)
  • Schedule formal reviews of the strategic plan’s goals, strategies, timelines, and responsibilities; validate measurements
  • Develop strategies to address obstacles or inability to accomplish goals
  • Document and communicate achievements with internal and external constituents
